Dear Friends in Christ,
Marriage is one of the seven sacraments given by Christ to His Church, but it is also a natural bond that exists between men and women of all religions and no religion. Moreover, marriage is also a contract acknowledged - and in some ways regulated - by civil authority in every nation on earth. All three of these dimensions can exist together or be separated into parts according to the circumstances. So, for example, when two baptized Christians marry each other for the first time, they bring into being by their exchange of consent the sacrament of matrimony, the natural bond of spousal love, and the civil contract all at the same time. And as long as they stay married to each other while they are both living, things remain simple and clear. It is when the civil contract of marriage is dissolved by a divorce decree from a civil court that things get confusing.
Because of the clear teaching of the Lord Jesus, Catholics believe that the sacramental bond of matrimony, once it truly comes into being, can be broken only by the death of one or both spouses. So long as they both shall live, however, no power on earth can break that bond. A civil divorce may allow the spouses to live separate lives, and in most countries those who are civilly divorced are now free to marry again in a new civil contract. But such re-marriage after divorce does not and cannot constitute the sacrament of Holy Matrimony, and that fact is often obscured in our time both by the great number of remarriages after divorce and by the equivocal use of the word “marriage.”
So, that no misunderstanding may exist among the people of SHJ & SHM, please remember that Catholic Christians must be married in the Church according to canonical form, which means that after their freedom to marry is established and the couple are properly prepared for the duties of marriage, they exchange their vows before a priest or deacon in their proper parish. A Catholic who marries anyone outside of the Church and without canonical form is “married” only in civil law and does not participate in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. And for this reason, such a Catholic may no longer receive Holy Communion or go to Confession until and unless he or she can exchange marital consent in the Church and bring into being the sacramental bond of Christian marriage.
There are many reasons why Catholics get married outside the Church and place themselves in impaired communion as described above. And all Catholics have a duty to accompany those who are living in such irregular marriages with love, patience, and understanding. But we also all have a duty to help those who may be married outside the Church to try to find a remedy for their situation by making use of the time tested means developed by the Church for this purpose. So, if you know a Catholic who is married outside the Church, please encourage them to approach their pastor to find a way back towards full communion with Christ and His Church. And anyone with questions about a particular situation is most welcome to contact myself (or better, Fr. Price, who was a judge on the Marriage Tribunal at the Archdiocese for decades).

Mass Intentions
We celebrate many milestones in Christian life, from baptisms to first communions, weddings to anniversaries, and births to final passing. It is in these moments we seek the emotional support of family and friends, and the strength that only God can provide. Mass intentions provide a spiritual gift to those you love. It tells the recipient that they are not alone in these moments. Mass intentions are a Catholic gift of prayer, asking God to bless them with his Spirit of love and peace. For that reason, they are perfect as baptism gifts, first communion gifts, and confirmation gifts. They are also comforting for those who are mourning the death of a loved one, or for a friend who may be struggling in life. If you'd like to schedule a Mass intention, fill out one of the envelopes at the entrance of the church or contact our secretary Pauline Davis at the parish office @ 613.472.2220 or sacredheart.mm@archkingston.ca
Don't forget our Flower Sponsor initiative to beautify the sanctuary and churches especially for the high holy days. A one time yearly donation of $40 will cover your week, and you'll also get a Mass intention included in that. So a great deal if you think about it! As you've been seeing at Mass, the churches were beautifully decorated in large part to your flower donations. And when you see in the Flocknotes Masses being offered "For the X Family Intentions" - usually those are from the Family flower sponsor. So if you want to contribute, there are white Flower sponsor envelopes in the narthex - just fill it out and drop it in the collection basket. Those Catholics confronted with serious illness, chronic illness, or surgery are invited to request the Sacrament of Anointing by calling Fr. Justin for an appointment. We also now have a wonderful Pastoral Care team made up of generous parishioners who can bring Holy Communion to the sick and those confined to their own homes. - This Sunday after the 9am Mass, there will be a raffle for a garden statue of Our Lady, Mother Mary. This is a fundraiser for the Youth Group to go to Stubenville, Ohio. So bring some $$ or just make a donation as you leave.
- I'm very much looking to seeing many of you at our Luau Murdery Mystery Dinner Party. It will be neat to see everyone in their character and costumes and a great way to raise some funds for new brighter and bigger light fixtures at SHJ. I've already purchased a ticket, and it'll be nice to see Fr. Price in a Hawaiian shirt after he returns from celebrating the 5pm Mass at St. Mike's in Belleville. $50 Tickets available from Cathy & Larrey Massey after SHM Mass and April & Amber Brownson after SHJ Mass.

What's funny/coincidental was that as I was listening to this episode (while driving to Kingston), friend-of-the-parish and parishioner of St. Carthagh's in Tweed Michelle G. emailed me this piece by Kingsnorth: But here's an excerpt from the preview:
"Paul is someone who has gone through a profound transformation over the past decade, and in a very public way. He was once considered one of the West’s most radical and prominent environmentalists—even chaining himself to a bridge in protest of road construction and leading The Ecologist, a left-wing environmental magazine. But he became disillusioned with an environmental movement that he says became obsessed with cutting carbon emissions by any means, and getting captured by commercial interests in the process. Paul and his family eventually left urban England to live off the land in rural Ireland, where they currently grow their own food and the children are homeschooled. Two local options to get to the March for Life in Ottawa on Thurs, May 9th. Some of us men from TMIY will be on the Bancroft Bus, FWIW. Join us as we march for life in solidarity with the vulnerable and marginalized and stand firm for the unborn, mothers in crisis pregnancies, individuals targeted due to disability, people suffering from mental illness or desperation, the elderly in hospitals and care homes. Come one, come all!
1) There will be a bus leaving Bancroft at 8am, and picking marchers up at SHM parking lot in Madoc around 8:50-9am. We will be leaving Ottawa when the March is over, around 2pm. 2) The Quinte Right to Life Association is once again planning our annual bus trip to Ottawa joining pro lifers from across the country in the Annual March for Life Rally on Thursday May 9th. We will be there to show our support for the sanctity of all human life from conception to natural death. Will you consider joining us? A local 32-seat coach bus will provide our comfortable transportation to and from the event @ $25 ea. Please note that we encourage early booking(s) for this trip by contacting Roy @ 613.968.9602 as soon as you possibly can. Thank you for your kind consideration in this life saving request. For logistical reasons the scheduled bus will meet all passengers in Belleville at the CAA Building, north entrance Wellness Centre area and will be leaving promptly, no latter than 9am.
The parish has new pink envlopes specifically dedicated to sponsoring the weekly 7-Day Votive Candles both at SHJ & SHM. This new envelope will replace the visitors envelope we had been using for this purpose, and as you can see, makes fulling the votive request quite easy on our parish secretary. So please being using these new ones going forward.
- 50th Anniversary of the Priestly Ordination of Fr. Richard Whalen
- Firstly, we will have a Social to mark the anniversary date on Sun, Apr 28 in the gymnasium of St. Michael Catholic School directly following the 11am Mass. This event will be an organized Potluck designed to involve as many parishioners as possible and to allow them to contribute and make this day extra special. There will be speeches, music, food and the opportunity for all to show their appreciation for Fr. Whalen's amazing service to God and us! Everyone is welcome.
- Secondly, there will be a Gala Dinner hosted at the National Canadian Air Force Museum on Sun, May 12. There will be a celebration of Vespers (Evening Prayer) let by Archbishop Mulhall with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church. Then the Gala event will begin with Cocktails at 3:45pm, and dinner will be served at 4:45 pm. This will be a formal event and we look forward to welcoming many of Fr. Whalen’s fellow priests. Tickets for this event will cost $50 per person or you can purchase a table for a mere $400. We look forward to a wonderful night featuring stories from those who know Father Richard best and some musical entertainment from his friends. If you cannot attend but would still like to contribute to this joyous occasion you can sponsor some individual seats and or a table.There will be 200 tickets available for this event so make sure you get yours!

- As the nicer weather is now upon us we will tend to gravitate to the outdoors, including visiting grave sites of our loved ones. Cemeteries are where families often come together to remember and keep the memory of a loved one alive. Throughout the history of mankind, mourning and burial rites have played a central role in our traditions. Visiting the deceased in cemeteries is also an important and long-standing ritual surrounding grief. For many people, visiting the burial site of a loved one is a concrete way to give time to the deceased. We sometimes feel a stronger connection in a cemetery as our entire attention and time are devoted to prayer, contemplation and personal thoughts. Cemeteries create a break from the outside world. With each visit, we can observe our path to healing or allow ourselves to experience pain when it is still heavy. Our board members of SHJ & SHM cemeteries encourage you to remember our cemeteries in your offerings.

The movie "Cabrini" (named after the Patron Saint of Immigrants, St. Francesca Cabrini) will be showing at the Aron Theatre in Campbellford from Friday April 19 to Tuesday April 23. Showtimes 7pm, except Sunday, which is a matinee at 2pm.

PRAYER FOR THE CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT YET MADE THEIR FIRST COMMUNION
O Virgin Mary, sweet Mother and protectress of the young, deign to watch in a special manner over those of our children who are still too young to make their first holy communion, and yet are old enough to be liable to offend God by sin. Remove from them all evil occasions and all dangerous companions. Do not allow their innocence to suffer shipwreck through evil conversations, and, if they have the misfortune of falling into sin, O deign to obtain for them the grace to make a good confession, and ever after to avoid sin and its occasions. Amen.
Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Fr. Justin & Fr. Price: Nov 17-26, 2024
Good News Update: After consulting with government authorities, unions, and security experts, Air Canada has resumed flights to Tel Aviv. (But the federal government still advises Canadians avoid non-essential travel to Israel due to the ongoing hostilities and the unpredictable security situation.)
Registrations are steadily coming in. There are no more single rooms available. A reminder that if you're interested, to secure your spot you must submit your registration form and the deposit, which will not be cashed until the travel advisory is officially removed. Hope you will prayerfully consider joining in what will be a once in a lifetime spiritual journey. So save the date and tell your friends and download the entire brochure (below). We had a wonderful and fun First Confession retreat last Saturday. Many thanks to Collleen Shannon for assisting and Teressa and Beatrice Krentz for preparing the luncheon. Pray for the kids as they'll be making thier first confession this Saturday & Sunday.

Introduction to Sourdough Bread Making

SHM CWL invites everyone, both men and women, to join us in a sourdough bread making workshop. This fun event will be hosted by our very own Teressa Krentz. You will be guided through the process of making a beginners sourdough loaf and instructed on how to shape and bake your loaf at home. Samples of various sourdough snacks, coffee, tea and juice will be provided. Come and enjoy some great food and spend time in laughter and fellowship, all while developing the skill of this lost art. We hope you will join us!
Cost of the event is $40 per person.

Calling all "bakers" and "wanna-be bakers" Spend a relaxing morning in the charming O’Neill Parish Hall, Madoc with delicious coffee, and tasty snacks with a sourdough theme, and learn to make a simple and delicious sourdough loaf.I am not an expert or professional bread maker, but I have been baking sourdough bread for a couple of years and would enjoy the opportunity to teach others this skill. Once you learn a basic loaf it will give you the confidence to take on other sourdough products and more complex loaves.
Why sourdough? Sourdough relies on a mix of wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria, rather than baker's yeast, to leaven the dough. It's richer in nutrients, less likely to spike your blood sugar, contains lower amounts of gluten, and is generally easier to digest than bread made with baker's yeast.

Three of our parishioners, students of the Encounter School of Ministry, Kingston Campus, will be presenting Fearless, a film/documentary about the power of God changing lives, followed by Q&A, personal testimonies and prayers for healing. Refreshments will be available. Colleen McAllister will be leading the Praise and Worship.
Come and experience an encounter with Jesus and deepen that relationship. Find out what it means to be fearlessly open to the workings of the Holy Spirit and to witness people who are living this out.
If you love the Lord and want to sing for Him, about Him and to Him - this singing group is for you. They say prayers put wings on wishes and singing is like praying twice. When we praise God our Father He comes closer. Jesus said we should all have the faith of children. This singing group will help us grow in our joy and in our faith by simple songs sung from the heart. If you are old enough to sing, you are old enough to join us! Starts Sunday, May 5th.

Project Rachel at St. Mary of Egypt Refuge in Queensborough is offering a retreat for women who suffer the loss of a child from abortion. The hiddenness, the aloneness, and the grief are met by volunteers and God’s healing power.
These weekend retreats offers support to women who have had an abortion experience and offers them an opportunity to experience compassion and understanding, and to find God's love, forgiveness and mercy in a non-judgmental confidential setting. If you or someone you love has experienced an abortion, healing is available. You can speak with someone who understands and cares, and have a chance to begin the healing from loss and grief. At our retreats, we welcome women whose pain has been silenced and denied by the world.
