Dear Friends in Christ,
Catholics who were at least teenagers by the late 1960’s or earlier remember when every parish church was not just the center of religious and educational life for everyone in the congregation; the parish was also the center of social life for children, teens, and adults of every age. Parish groups hosted dinners, dances, parties, athletic events, game nights, pancake suppers, and assorted other gatherings often organized by age, sex, and marital status, and everyone was encouraged to invite others from outside the parish to join in these events. It was in many ways a golden age of parish life in Canada, but that age has passed and will not return in our time. There are now too many activities available to everyone and too many opportunities beyond the parish for the local church to be the hub of social life even for deeply committed Catholics, and while we may regret this fact of life, we would also do very well to accept it as the starting point for asking a crucial question: What can we do to make the parish more than the place where we come for Mass on Sunday?

All people naturally crave the company of others and the fostering of real bonds of friendship and fellowship, and when a community of people is knit together by overlapping lines of this sort, the result is a palpable sense of belonging with others, of being accountable to others, and of being responsible for others. That is what changes a crowd into a congregation, and then when you come to Mass on Sunday, you won’t be sharing the pews with strangers or just with familiar faces; instead, you will be worshipping with brothers and sisters in the Lord. You will learn about their joys and sorrows, and they will learn about yours. You will feel an authentic human connection to others who may or may not move in your professional or social circles, but you will know that you share a bond with them that is deep and real and permanent because it flows from our Baptism. And that is the basis for everything that follows.
But no one can form this experience of community for us; we must do it ourselves. Introduce yourself by name to someone you see at Mass but cannot yet call by name. Join a group in the parish, even if it’s a bit out of your comfort zone. Read the weekly Flocknote rather than wave it off as a nuisance in your inbox. Look for opportunities to serve others or contact me to suggest a new group or activity in the parish. Decide to do something more than pop in for one hour on random Sundays to get what you want, or fulfill a dreary duty, or get someone else off your back by going to Mass. Instead, make a commitment to be part of something larger than yourself.
The Parish Directory has finally arrived.
Our parishes will never again look as they did in the 1950’s when people could leave their doors unlocked all night, and most families had only one income, and 70% of Catholics came to Mass on Sunday. But we can build something real and life-giving for those who do come here to give rather than take, and from such an authentic Christian community, who knows what blessings will flow?!

7-Day Votive Candle Offerings
Candles have always had an important part of worship. The people of Israel in the Temple would have prayed with the flicker of many lights, what we know as the Menorah. Throughout Christian churches we also see many details associated with Temple worship, like candles. Our Blessed Lord himself refers to him in this way: "I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." At the Easter Vigil, the Paschal Candle is processed in with proclamations of “Christ our Light” and the light from one candle spreads through the church through many individual candles. Christ came as our light, and he wished that his light be spread through each of us…you are the light of the world.

Mass Intentions
We celebrate many milestones in Christian life, from baptisms to first communions, weddings to anniversaries, and births to final passing. It is in these moments we seek the emotional support of family and friends, and the strength that only God can provide. Mass intentions provide a spiritual gift to those you love. It tells the recipient that they are not alone in these moments. Mass intentions are a Catholic gift of prayer, asking God to bless them with his Spirit of love and peace. For that reason, they are perfect as baptism gifts, first communion gifts, and confirmation gifts. They are also comforting for those who are mourning the death of a loved one, or for a friend who may be struggling in life. If you'd like to schedule a Mass intention, fill out one of the envelopes at the entrance of the church or contact our secretary Pauline Davis at the parish office @ 613.472.2220 or sacredheart.mm@archkingston.ca
Don't forget our Flower Sponsor initiative to beautify the sanctuary and churches especially for the high holy days. A one time yearly donation of $40 will cover your week, and you'll also get a Mass intention included in that. So a great deal if you think about it! As you've been seeing at Mass, the churches were beautifully decorated in large part to your flower donations. And when you see in the Flocknotes Masses being offered "For the X Family Intentions" - usually those are from the Family flower sponsor. So if you want to contribute, there are white Flower sponsor envelopes in the narthex - just fill it out and drop it in the collection basket. Anointing of the Sick
Those Catholics confronted with serious illness, chronic illness, or surgery are invited to request the Sacrament of Anointing by calling Fr. Justin for an appointment. We also now have a wonderful Pastoral Care team made up of generous parishioners who can bring Holy Communion to the sick and those confined to their own homes. Again, if you are someone or know of someone who would like to receive Sacraments at their home, please contact the office @ 613.472.2220 more information.

- SHM Parishioners: The Holy Rosary will be prayed every day during the month of May at 9am in front of the Our Lady of Fatima shrine (except when there are Masses - Wednesdays, the First Saturday and Sundays. All are welcome!
- On Wednesdays and the First Saturday, we can individually say the rosary during Holy Hour.
- On Sundays we can meet at 8:30am like we've done before and one of us will lead from the ambo. Talk to Cathy Massey if you'd like to lead it one day.
- If you are unable to attend, you can write your prayer intentions out and place them in the box on the Fatima shrine altar. Pens and slips of paper are there for this purpose and your intentions will be prayed for each day (though not read)
- SHJ Parishioners: The Rosary will be recited before at 10:30am every Sunday in May. Come early to pray it together with the parish.

- Plan on staying around after the 9am Mass this Sun, Apr 28th for a simple Toonie Breakfast in O'Neill Parish Hall in Madoc sponsored by the CWL.
- FYI, we'll do our May crowning of Our Lady on the first Sunday of May (5th) at the 9 & 11am Masses repectively (and not on May 1st.)

- A reminder to those who use our respective parish halls and kitchens for any reason to leave it clean and please observe the signs for clean up. It's not fair to the ones who follow. Thank you.
- As mentioned above, the new parish directories have arrived. Thank you for your patience. They turned out well. On behalf of parishioners, I thank Dale Clemens & Debbie Wood for coordinating with IPC and organizing the pictures and layout. It was a big job. A reminder that only those who had their picture taken will receive a directory, which will be distributed after the Saturday & Sunday Masses.
- Gardening Volunteers Needed: to help with the beds and gardens, planting and maintenance of the gardens at SHJ & SHM. Frequency will depend on how many volunteers we have; a schedule will be created once a team has been formed. If you would like more information, speak to Fr. Justin.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston will gather in joy and thanksgiving for the Ordination of Mr. Jude Thusiar to the Transitional Diaconate by The Most Rev. Michael Mulhall, Archbishop of Kingston, on Saturday, May 18, 2024 @ 10:30am at St. Michael the Archangel, 296 Church Street, Belleville. All are welcome to join the celebration. Jude will be ordained to the priesthood next year, God-willing.
"I was born in North York in the GTA. I moved around the GTA quite a bit, hitting Scarborough, Pickering, North York, and Mississauga. I moved to Kingston, to study Mechanical Engineering at Queen's. Once I completed my degree I worked as a contract engineer for a tech start-up here in Kingston. At a young age, I received a call from the Lord in a very humorous way (ask me about it sometime!). That call, stayed in my heart, and I never stopped thinking about it. As I started work as an engineer, I also started seriously discerning the Lord's call! Soon I was certain that the Lord wanted me to further discern the priesthood in the seminary. So with His grace, I applied! I hope that the seminary will help me to further discern the Lord's will for me and to grow in holiness and mission! I am incredibly excited to see what the Lord has in store for me, He has never disappointed me in the past, and He always promises the best! Please pray for me as I continue discernment on my path to the priesthood. Verso L'alto!"
- The Archdiocese urgently needs priests who are willing to devote their lives to the service of God and his people in our local Church. Without priests to offer the Mass, celebrate the Sacraments, preach the Word of God, and provide pastoral leadership in our parishes, the Church cannot fulfil her evangelizing mission of bringing Christ to the world.
- Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood from the men in our Archdiocese. Savio Kocherry (who was with us this past Paschal Triduum) and Will Danahy are both from Belleville with St. Michael the Archangel as their home parish in the Archdiocese.
- One of my friends who I believe is the only officially recognized consecrated virgins and hermits in the Archdiocese (perpetually professed for the past 8 years) has been living at a hermitage in St. Thomas but is currently looking for housing until the end of October, at which point she will go to the American south. This good Sister and depends upon Divine Providence for accommodation in her itinerant life and is looking for a hermitage just for the summer. Is anyone reading this in a position to help or know of a place? This would be one concrete way you could support vocations to the religious life.
- On Thursday we had an inspiring evening (above) hosted by three of our parishioners - Willie Kuttschrutter and John & Kathy Pieres who are students of the Encounter School of Ministry (Kingston Campus). We watched the powerful documentary Fearless (below) which I had never seen, and it touched me and I'm sure others to be fearlessly open to the workings of the Holy Spirit and to be amazed at the people who are living this out. Thank you to all who came out and especially to Colleen McAllister who led us in praise. If you weren't able to join us, I highly recommend you watch the documentary, which is powerful and actually quite humours at times!

On the recommendation of SHJ Parish Council, a Generac was purchased this week for the rectory (still looking for one for the church) in the event of a prolonged power outage. We thank our Property Committee for their work in this matter.
If you love the Lord and want to sing for Him, about Him and to Him - this singing group is for you. They say prayers put wings on wishes and singing is like praying twice. When we praise God our Father He comes closer. Jesus said we should all have the faith of children. This singing group will help us grow in our joy and in our faith by simple songs sung from the heart. If you are old enough to sing, you are old enough to join us!

UPDATE: The Quinte Right to Life bus leaving from Belleville has been filled.
Two local options to get to the March for Life in Ottawa on Thurs, May 9th. Some of us men from TMIY will be on the Bancroft Bus, FWIW. Join us as we march for life in solidarity with the vulnerable and marginalized and stand firm for the unborn, mothers in crisis pregnancies, individuals targeted due to disability, people suffering from mental illness or desperation, the elderly in hospitals and care homes. Come one, come all!
1) There will be a bus leaving Bancroft at 8am, and picking marchers up at SHM parking lot in Madoc around 8:50-9am. We will be leaving Ottawa when the March is over, around 2pm. On Wednesday morning (Apr 24) I was told by a classmate that it was Secretaries Day, so I hastily offered to take our wonderful secretary Pauline out for a lunch at Miner's Restaurant. Thank you Pauline for your tireless work at the parish.

Canoeing and Walking Pilgrimages
6th Annual Rideau Canal Men's Retreat 2024
August 6-8 (Tue-Thur).
The goal is to gather Catholic men in an outdoor adventure/retreat where we can share our Faith and enjoy a little male camaraderie. Similar to last year we will paddle 2 full days of approximately 16-18 kms a day. We will experience the rugged beauty of a relatively sheltered section of the Rideau Canal, traversing 4 sets of locks over the 2 days (32-34 kms).
Please take this as an invitation to join us. I hope that all who are interested in partaking in this enjoyable event can work their schedules and join us for this time of prayer, daily Mass, opportunities for Confession, and lots of fraternity and adventure. If you know other men who may be interested and are not on this distribution list, please feel free to forward an invitation to them. In the Footsteps of the Holy Canadian Martyrs Walking Pilgrimage
From Aug 11-17, my friend Fr. Eric Mason of the Diocese of Peterborough is once again leading his very successful 130 km 7-day walking pilgrimage from St Joseph Church, Powassan to Holy Family Church, Britt in honour of the Holy Canadian Martyrs
Open to all ages (children under 12 years old must be accompanied by at least one parent).
Participants should be in good physical health as we walk an average of 25 km per day.
Holy Mass is celebrated daily. We pray the rosary together each day. There are a few spiritual talks throughout the week. The sacrament of Confession is available daily.

The cedar trees have been removed from the front of SHM. Thank you Joanne Forestell and CWL President Debbie Wood for working together to arrange the removal before grass seed was spread and the new sign was mounted, generously paid for by the SHM CWL. Jacques Lambier constructed the sign posts. The front entrance will be landscaped shortly.
A really fun and informative session on how to make sourdough, masterfully taught by Teressa Krentz and sponsored by the SHM CWL. Nice to see so many people from the parish and wider community come out for this!

Celebrating 50 Year Golden Anniversary of Ordinations to the Priesthood
Fr. Richard Whalen: A social this Sun, Apr 28 in the gymnasium of St. Michael Catholic School (Bellevlle) directly following the 11am Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving . This event will be an organized potluck designed to involve as many parishioners and former parishioners as possible and to allow them to contribute and make this day extra special. There will be speeches, music, food and the opportunity for all to show their appreciation for Fr. Whalen's amazing service to God and his people. All are welcome.
Secondly, on Sun, May 12th, there will be a celebration of Vespers (Evening Prayer) with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church. This is followed by a Gala Dinner hosted at the National Canadian Air Force Museum beggining with Cocktails at 3:45pm, and dinner will be served at 4:45pm. Tickets for this event will cost $50 per person or you can purchase a table for a mere $400. We look forward to a wonderful night featuring stories from those who know Fr. Whalen best and some musical entertainment from his friends. If you cannot attend but would still like to contribute to this joyous occasion you can sponsor some individual seats and or a table. - Spring cleaning? Our Knights of Columbus Council 7301 council will be holding a Yard Sale on Saturday, June 6th at Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mamora. Please consider turning your surplus household items into cash for worthy local causes. We will accept most household items in good condition but no clothes. Money raised will be forwarded to the many charitable groups the Knights of Columbus support. Don't miss this opportunity to contribute. Many thanks to the Knights for sweeping up all the dirt, sand, dust that accumulated over the winter in our parking lots. The amount of debris removed was unbelievable. It's all been thoroughly swept now, which will prevent it from being tracked into the church. We're very appreciative of all that the Knights of Columbus do for our parish, including setting up the hall for Saturday's funeral reception.
