Great news! The Vatican's sacred music school is seeking to teach Catholics worldwide how to sing ancient Gregorian chant, in Latin, as a means to help the faithful participate actively in the liturgy, including in papal Masses. The institute described Gregorian chant as a "rich heritage" and a "universal musical and spiritual language". I would highly encourage you to check out these videos.

As we continue to follow the lead of our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, I'd also like to introduce more Latin into our liturgies. We are already pretty familiar with the Sanctus and the Agnus Dei, and on certain high holy days we've done the Gloria in Latin, but one prayer I've always wanted to introduce is the Our Father in Latin. Well now seems like the opportune time, given the new Holy Father has been leading the faithful in it several times during the past few weeks.
The Pater Noster can be found in the CBW II 343g, and we can gradually introduce it over the summer. The following video will help.
After all, the use of Latin in liturgy is an expression of unity in a diverse, universal Church. Or as one commentator put it, "To be able to “sing with the Pope” is not about being able to sing in an ancient traditional language. It’s to be able to sing with the Pontiff – the bridge builder – in a way that truly does build bridges between cultures, peoples, societies – and even over time."
It is also my hope that we will be able to fulfill what Sacrosanctum Concilium called for at Vatican II which was, "that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them" (54). And also, "The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services" (116).

I didn’t always know that Jesus loved me and died for me. I always felt it wasn’t for me, and I kept Him at a distance for my teenage years. While taking Discovery in my first year at the University of Ottawa, I realized I was tired of living the life I was living. Thanks to being introduced to my closest friends today through CCO, I was able to deepen my faith and love for Jesus. As my faith grew, I began to lead faith studies, where I fell in love with the mission and sharing my faith with others. It has been an absolute privilege witnessing God work in the lives of young men around me, and I want to continue helping these guys know God the way that I do.

I first met Jesus at a youth retreat when I was 12 years old. Although I was blessed to grow up in a Catholic home, it was only until I was by myself and in the wilderness that I came to know Who I was missing. I walked into a room of twenty kids my age who were so absorbed in praise and worship, and I was so attracted to the beauty around me, and the Person they were worshipping. It was at this retreat that I realized that Beauty had a Name, and His Name was Jesus, and He was calling me to come home. I placed Christ at the centre of my life and since then, my desire to grow in my relationship with Him led me to meeting CCO in 2018. CCO has given me the opportunity to get to know Jesus deeply, to be so confident in Him and my faith, and to share my heart, and my story, and my God with others– and what a wonderful thing that is!

I will be celebrating my 25th Anniversary of Ordination to the Holy Priesthood on Sunday, the 25th of May, at the 10:30am Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral with a reception to follow under the tents on the lawns of the cathedral.
It doesn’t seem possible that it has been 25 years since you hosted my First Celebration of Holy Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus, on Sunday, May 28th, 2000 and the spectacular reception and dinner you provided for me that evening. I continue to be deeply grateful. I also would be grateful and honoured if you were able to attend my celebration in Kingston on May 25th. If you might be able to come please no gifts. Your presence would be the best gift you could give me. I know most of you will not be able to come. I would be deeply grateful for your prayers on this milestone occasion. Requesting Mass Intentions

The Greatest of Gifts ~ The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass: We celebrate many milestones in Christian life, from baptisms to first communions, weddings to anniversaries, and births to final passing. It is in these moments we seek the emotional support of family and friends, and the strength that only God can provide. Mass intentions provide a spiritual gift to those you love. It tells the recipient that they are not alone in these moments. Mass intentions are a Catholic gift of prayer, asking God to bless them with his Spirit of love and peace. For that reason, they are perfect as baptism gifts, first communion gifts, and confirmation gifts. They are also comforting for those who are mourning the death of a loved one, or for a friend who may be struggling in life.
Requesting a Mass Intention is easy! Just contact our secretary Pauline Davis (613.472.2220 or SacredHeart.MM@archkingston.ca) or better yet, use the mass intention envelopes found in the vestibule, fill it out and put in the $20 offering and place it in the collection basket at Mass. We will do our best to have the Mass offered on the date requested.
Don't forget our Flower Sponsor initiative to beautify the sanctuary and churches especially for the high holy days. A one time yearly donation of $40 will cover your week, and you'll also get a Mass intention included in that. So a great deal if you think about it! As you've been seeing at Mass, the churches were beautifully decorated in large part to your flower donations. And when you see in the Flocknotes Masses being offered "For the X Family Intentions" - usually those are from the Family flower sponsor. So if you want to contribute, there are white Flower sponsor envelopes in the narthex - just fill it out and drop it in the collection basket. Pastoral Care of the Sick: Is one of your loved ones struggling with illness or homebound? Or are they at the hospital or retirement/nursing home and would like to have a visit from one of our Pastoral Care team members or by Fr. Justin? Does your homebound or hospitalized loved one wish to receive Holy Communion? Would you like prayers for your loved one? Do you wish to have the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick? Remember that the Sacrament of Anointing is for the sick, not just a sacrament for those who are actively dying. Those Catholics confronted with serious illness, chronic illness, or surgery are invited to request the Sacrament of Anointing by calling Fr. Justin for an appointment. We also have a wonderful Pastoral Care team made up of generous parishioners who can bring Holy Communion to the sick and those confined to their own homes. With the approach of summer, I need to remind every household in the parish of two things. First, even when we are travelling away from home, we are still bound by the obligation to attend Mass each Sunday because there is no vacation from the Commandments. A little effort before a trip begins (e.g. a web search for local parishes and Mass times) will make it very easy to join in the Sunday celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist even while we’re away. Second, while we hope everyone has the chance to take a break from routine and travel to see family, friends, or new places, please remember that while you’re gone we are still here and so are our bills. If your plan of stewardship is carefully considered, then it will be easy to continue to do your part for the parish family even while you’re away. Two of the simplest ways of doing this are e-transfers of your offertory contributions or sending your weekly envelopes to us through the mail. In either case, thank you for your commitment to SHJ & SHM.If you need a convenient way to make regular offerings or if you plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out our electronic giving options.

- Let's remember that the obligation to attend Mass is a serious one rooted in the Third Commandment of the Decalogue: "Remember to Keep Holy the Sabbath Day" (for Christians - Sunday). Only a serious reason (illness, care of a child, etc.) excuses the obligation. To deliberately and wilfully miss Mass on Sunday provides the material for Mortal Sin which would require sacramental confession for forgiveness.

- Disposal of Religious (Blessed) Items: As Catholics, we are accustomed to having religious objects "blessed," which signifies the permanent sanctification and dedication of an object for some sacred purpose. Once a religious object is blessed and dedicated for divine worship or veneration, it must be treated with reverence and must not be used in either an improper or profane way. But what do you do with blessed objects that are broken or beyond repair? While it is not a sin to throw away blessed items, the normal "rule of thumb" is to burn them. Items that cannot be burned should be disassembled or destroyed in a way that prevents any profane re-use. The ashes or destroyed objects should then be collected and buried on church grounds or in a Catholic cemetery. This type of disposal honours their sacred purpose and returns them to the earth in a dignified way.
- For centuries, church bells have played a prominent role in the history of parishes throughout the world. Historically, church bells have served as timekeepers, used to mark the hour for work, prayer, and the call to worship. In addition, they often ring to commemorate special occasions and events. When our bells ring daily at Noon and 6pm, don't forget to pause and recite the Angelus or the Regina Caeli (in the Easter season), to reflect on the Incarnation and the Resurrection, and also the vital role our Catholic faith and parish plays in our lives.
- If anyone knows where we can acquire a beautiful Marian outdoor statue, please let Fr. Justin know. SHM is looking for one that is between 4-4.5 ft, all-weather, and most of all, has a beautiful face. We plan on putting her on a solid pedestal in front of the church, surrounded by flowers, etc. But her face needs to be really beautiful.
- Gardening Volunteers Needed: to help with the beds and gardens, planting and maintenance of the gardens at SHJ & SHM. Frequency will depend on how many volunteers we have; a schedule will be created once a team has been formed. If you would like more information, speak to Fr. Justin
- Now that the May long-weekend has passed, we conclude our Junior Liturgy program for the season. As you've seen, it's pretty amazing just how many little ones are participating week after week. We are so grateful for our dedicated catechists who have generously taught our children. Thank you to Cheryl, Kelly, Colleen, April, Patricia, Nicole, Cathy, Teressa & Christoper!
Novena to the Holy Spirit: The Easter season culminates on Pentecost Sun, June 8, 2025. Christians have prepared for Pentecost for over 2000 years by joining together for 9 days of prayer. This first Novena was instituted when Jesus instructed the Apostles, “And I myself will send upon you what my Father has promised. But you must wait in the city until the power from above comes down upon you” (Luke 23:49). We invite you to pray this novena - beginning on Fri, May 30 - for the intentions of the Archdiocese. An invitation to Catholic men 18 years and older (including fathers and teenage sons) to share and deepen their Faith while enjoying male camaraderie - in the context of an outdoor adventure by canoe.
Beginning at Seeley’s Bay on Tues., Aug. 5 at 7:30am, paddling 16 km along the historic Rideau Canal through locks at Jones Falls, with overnight tenting at Davis Locks.
On Wednesday, the 18km route passes through Chaffey’s and Newboro Locks into the Upper Rideau Lake, with overnight tenting along McNally’s Bay. Retreat ends Thursday at 2 pm.
Canoes and paddles supplied, along with meals. Cost: $95. Daily Mass, Rosary, prayer, opportunities for Confession, talks by priests and laymen, socializing, and invigorating exercise make this annual Catholic men’s retreat a popular one.
