July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ
Dear Friends in Christ,
The month of July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus. The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in 1849 by Pius IX, but the devotion is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood.
The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at his glorious Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of his risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it.
We'll do the Votive Mass for the Precious Blood tomorrow (Friday) at the SHM Cemetery Mass and throughout the month and recite the Litany as well.

It's that time of year again when we pray for our beloved dead who are still stuck in purgatory. So we offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to spring them out, by the merits of our Saviour Jesus Christ and his atoning passion, death and resurrection. These Masses commemorate all of our deceased relatives, friends and parishioners.
Invite your friends, family, neighbours and anyone who has loved ones buried in our cemeteries. Hopefully if we pray for them, they can pray for us when they're in Heaven. This is what it means to be part of the Communion of Saints.
It is only through your generous support that we can continue to maintain the beautification of our cemeteries. A special donation envelope will be available for this purpose.

Recommendations, Links & Random Thoughts
- The capacity of “the people” to be sovereign, to govern themselves through freely elected representatives, depends directly on the capacity of each person to govern himself. In other words, we must each be virtuous if we are all to be free. The cultivation of personal virtue is hard work, and it requires discipline and the acceptance of a standard of virtue beyond one’s own desires and choices. This is why the culture of radical autonomy and “freedom of choice” which is now used to justify moral degradation of every conceivable sort is, in truth, a greater threat to the liberty of our nation than any external enemy or armed force. Making our own desires the measure of goodness is a sure path to individual vice and national servitude, so given this past Tueday's 158th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, we can best serve the cause of our nation’s freedom by resolving to cultivate virtue in our own lives. As Chesterton put it, "The answer to the question, 'What is Wrong?' is, or should be, 'I am wrong.' Until a man can give that answer his idealism is only a hobby."
- In these humid, sweltering days of summer, we’re all looking for ways to beat the heat. At SHJ, we like our buildings cool, and in fact the church makes a great place of retreat in the middle of the day, not only from the heat, but also from the noise and busyness of the outside world. If you’re in the area on the weekdays, consider making a visit to our Lord, sacramentally present in the tabernacle. Stay for five, fifteen, or even thirty minutes. Enjoy the quiet, and the cool. Take advantage of the oasis that our church is: spend some time with the Good Lord as you beat the heat.
- Starting this Saturday for the upcoming week, we're privileged to have an icon depicting the most famous image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, painted in 1767 by Pompeo Batoni and now venerated in the Church of the Gesù in Rome. The reproduction bears the blessing of Pope Francis, through the Papal Almoner, and is one of more than 300 icons travelling across the world, from Knights of Columbus council to council, for veneration and use in prayer services. This will be displayed fittingly in SHJ and meant to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and pray for Our Lord to make his heart our own, so that we may see and love in others what he sees and loves in us. (Founder of the Knights of Columbus Blessed Michael McGivney had a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart. The McGivney family had a devotional plaque of the Sacred Heart in their home that is still in the Knights’ possession. Additionally, it was discovered that McGivney was buried with a cloth image of the Sacred Heart when his body was exhumed in 1981.)

- Travelling this summer? Making summer vacation plans? Even when we are travelling away from home, we are still bound by the obligation to attend Mass each Sunday because there is no vacation from the Commandments. A little effort before a trip begins (e.g. a web search for local parishes and Mass times) will make it very easy to join in the Sunday celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist even while we’re away. - At the Masses this weekend, the ushers will be handing out a little invitation to our St. Bernadette’s Mass and BBQ Picnic in Ormsby on Sun, Aug 3rd @ 11:30am. If you plan on attending, please mark how many guests in your party will be attending and drop it in the collection over the next few Sundays so we can plan the food accordingly. Thank you!

An update from Willie Kuttschrutter, who arrived safely in Jamaica to visit her dying brother and friend of SHJ, Fr. Joseph Burg (91). Fr. Joseph is an Oratorian belonging to the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. Let's pray that Fr. Joseph has a good and holy death: "Arrived successfully. Fr. Joe was expecting me. He is very weak , is occasionally able to walk, with help only. Most of the time he isn't aware of anyone or anything, but he recognizes my voice and smiles when he does. He does not recognize his nieces, sadly enough. He responds better to Dutch than English, so I can get him to eat or get up, when others can't. He has around the clock nurses, which takes a load of the priests. 4 are away on holidays for a month, so the ones left have all the work of 3 parishes, which are quite spread out. I don't think he will be with us for very long, and yesterday I heard him say, " How much longer, Lord?" This is all the news for now. Please inform Fr. Justin and Fr. Price as well as the regulars at church. Thanks."

Did you know that to practice the First Saturday Devotion one must do the following with the intention to make reparation for the offences against the Immaculate Heart?
- Go to Confession,
- Receive Holy Communion at any Mass on the day of the First Saturday Devotion (either a morning Mass or an evening anticipated Mass),
- Pray five decades of the Rosary,
- Keep Our Lady company for fifteen minutes while meditating on one or more of the mysteries of the Rosary.
Last Sunday was wonderful in our parishes. Sacred Heart of Mary's CWL hosted a "Sundae Sunday" reception for the parish First Communion & Confirmation recipients. O'Neill Parish Hall was beautifully decorated. Barb Rivers made the beautiful cupcakes and white chocolate "praying hands" moulds. And Sacred Heart of Jesus' CWL threw a fun farewell reception to celebrate Fr. Michael Gauvreau's 23rd anniversary of priestly ordination and his departure later this month to rejoin his Fransican order in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Thank you to Debbie Wood and Anne Marie McGregor and the ladies of the CWL for putting these on, and for everyone for sticking around to join in the festivities.

Requesting Mass Intentions
We celebrate many milestones in Christian life, from baptisms to first communions, weddings to anniversaries, and births to final passing. It is in these moments we seek the emotional support of family and friends, and the strength that only God can provide. Mass intentions provide a spiritual gift to those you love. It tells the recipient that they are not alone in these moments. Mass intentions are a Catholic gift of prayer, asking God to bless them with his Spirit of love and peace. For that reason, they are perfect as baptism gifts, first communion gifts, and confirmation gifts. They are also comforting for those who are mourning the death of a loved one, or for a friend who may be struggling in life. Remember, we must always be mindful of those who struggle to provide the necessities of life. Our parishes are always engaged in supporting works of Christian charity through financial contributions and the direct service offered by our members, and in the months ahead, I will work with the parish to find ever more effective ways of serving those in need right here in our own community. Because of the sometimes frustrating nature of serving the least of the Lord’s brethren, it is a perennial temptation to substitute political action for Christian service. Seeking social change through political action is not a bad thing, of course, but that is not the Church’s mission. As individual disciples and as a parish family, we are called to serve individual human persons in poverty with practical and direct support, not to engage in utopian schemes of eliminating poverty in the abstract, and together we will continue to find creative ways to serve those in need. As the Lord Jesus teaches us, “By this will all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13.35)
This summer, we hope everyone has the chance to take a break from routine and travel to see family, friends, or new places, please remember that while you’re gone we are still here and so are our bills. If your plan of stewardship is carefully considered, then it will be easy to continue to do your part for the parish family even while you’re away. Two of the simplest ways of doing this are e-transfers of your offertory contributions or sending your weekly envelopes to us through the mail. In either case, thank you for your commitment to SHJ & SHM. Those Catholics confronted with serious illness, chronic illness, or surgery are invited to request the Sacrament of Anointing by calling Fr. Justin for an appointment. We also now have a wonderful Pastoral Care team made up of generous parishioners who can bring Holy Communion to the sick and those confined to their own homes. Again, if you are someone or know of someone who would like to receive Sacraments at their home, please contact the office @ 613.472.2220 for more information.
Don't forget our Flower Sponsor initiative to beautify the sanctuary and churches especially for the high holy days. A one time yearly donation of $40 will cover your week, and you'll also get a Mass intention included in that. So a great deal if you think about it! As you've been seeing at Mass, the churches were beautifully decorated in large part to your flower donations. And when you see in the Flocknotes Masses being offered "For the X Family Intentions" - usually those are from the Family flower sponsor. So if you want to contribute, there are white Flower sponsor envelopes in the narthex - just fill it out and drop it in the collection basket.
