Tuesday morning, shortly before 5am local time, a man entered a shrine in Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and set it on fire. Outside he wrote 'Devil in a skirt' on a statue of Our Lady. Medjugorje is one of the world’s best-known Catholic pilgrimage sites. Tens of thousands of young people are expected later this week for the annual youth festival. Thankfully, Catholics quickly came together to clean and restore it.
In this month dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, it's good to remember that the physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person and is the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive for us to a similar love and virtue. Our Lady asked for the practice of the Five First Saturdays to help make amends for the offences committed against her heart by the blasphemies and ingratitude of men. (The practice parallels the devotion of the Nine First Fridays in honour of the Sacred Heart.)
So let us remember this devotion year-round, but particularly through the month of August. I encourage you to attend the First Saturday Mass tomorrow to make reparation for this grave act of sacrilege.

PS - This Sunday, August 2nd is important to the Franciscan Family and it is fortuitous that it happens to fall upon the Lord's Day this year.
One night in 1216, Francis awoke and felt a strong impulse to enter the chapel of the Portiuncola and pray. While at prayer, Our Lord and Our Lady appeared to
Francis and asked him what he desired. Thinking of others and recognizing his own sinfulness, Francis spoke, "O God, although I am a great sinner, I beseech You to grant a full pardon of all sins to all who, having repented and confessed their sins, shall visit this church."
Our Lord answered, "Francis, you ask much, but you are worthy of greater things, and greater things you shall have." The Lord granted the Indulgence and Pope Honorius III ratified it. Originally the Indulgence was attached only to the Porticuncola. However, subsequent Popes expanded the churches in which the Indulgence can be gained. Since we are privileged to have at SHM the only official archdiocesan shrine - Our Lady of Fatima - when you come to Mass on Sunday in Madoc, or come to SHJ in Marmora, just kneel before the (shrine) altar take advantage of the graces afforded by this special Indulgence. Links, Recommendations & Random Thoughts
- The Letter of St. Paul to the Romans (from which we will read on Sunday in the Second Reading) is one of the most important texts of the New Testament. It’s the longest of the 21 letters in the New Testament, and for St. Paul it’s the most systematic presentation of the Gospel. Most of the other letters were written for some particular purpose – to correct a specific heresy or address a division among individual persons. But the Letter to the Romans was not written for that purpose, and so it has a different character.
- On every Sunday from mid-June to mid-September, the Second Reading is taken from Romans. Now these 14 weeks is the perfect opportunity for you to read and study Paul’s Letter to the Romans in great detail. It’s difficult because of the nature of the text, but it is a beautiful exposition of the very heart of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Remember that Paul is writing to explain to the suffering Christians in Rome why they should not be intimidated by the things they must suffer, either in the conflict between Gentile and Jew, or in the conflict between Christian and Pagan. This Sunday our Second Reading is taken from the end of Chapter 8. The eloquent argument that Paul makes for the faithful in Rome applies equally to us Roman Catholics today, and it is this: the almighty power of God, who loves mankind to the point of handing over his Only begotten Son to be put to death, will ensure that we emerge unscathed and victorious from all attacks, all dangers and all suffering, and we will do so not through our own efforts, but by virtue of the all-powerful aid of Him who has loved us from all eternity. Nothing that happens to us can separate us from the love of God, “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything in all creation” – none of these potential threats is an actual threat to those enveloped in God’s love. As the Psalmist says, “You open your hand to feed us Lord, and satisfy our needs.” God gratuitously gives all that we need, but admittedly, we can accept or reject it. That’s why in Paul’s mind, only sin can pry us away from his grace.
- So what are we to do? Well, we do what Paul did: surrender our lives in the obedience of faith to Jesus Christ, confident not in our goodness but his; claiming not our own righteousness, but his; and seeking not our own justification, but his mercy. That is the way of the life Paul learned from Jesus and practiced himself; a way of life that took him to his death, confident that the glory promised would be his. And in the midst of the struggle, that which sustains us is not our selves! It is the love of God given to us in Christ Jesus, which lifts us up to the Throne of Grace so that even in the midst of our sufferings, we may know what it is to believe and live the truth that Jesus Christ is Lord.

- Our plans for the 8th Annual Rideau Canal Men’s Retreat by canoe are shaping up very well, with an enthusiastic group of some 58 men currently registered - yet another increase from the 22 participants in 2023 and 38 in 2024 and 56 in 2025. We are grateful that Archbishop Mulhall will offer the opening Mass, concelebrated by 9 priests, under the pavilion at the Seeley's Bay canoe launch area. Friend of the parish Chris Clovis (in the back of the canoe, above) will be giving one of the talks. Many thanks to Fr. Price for (again) covering me for much of the upcoming week while I will be paddling. Whoever left the generous and anonymous donation in the collection a few weeks back towards this men's river retreat, thank you very much! Say a prayer that all goes well and that it is a fruitful, enjoyable and accident-free event again this year.
This weekend, SHJ Parishioners have a Restoration Fund envelope in their offertory boxes. Please be generous in your giving. By being that warm and welcoming, Christ-centred Catholic community, we are fortunate to be the recipient of much generosity. Thank you to all our parishioners (and visitors) for your continued commitment to our parish. When it comes to stewardship and ministry we must always remember these four principles: Cheerfulness, Generosity, Gratitude, and Intentionality. Let us never forget, “God loves a cheerful giver!” so thank you for your generous and sacrificial commitment to our parish.

Come and See – Speaker’s Series:

As part of the Archdiocese of Kingston’s 200th Anniversary, you are warmly invited to an inspiring evening of faith with outstanding Catholic speakers. Four talks will take place simultaneously across our deaneries, followed by Vespers at 7:45 p.m. and a coffee/tea social at 8pm. Locations and speakers are listed on the handout you'll be given after Mass. Please make it a priority to attend one of these talks - you won't regret it. It'll be a grace-filled evening across our Archdiocese. Details are also on the poster at the back of the church. If one of Thursday's talks don't work for you, come and hear Cardinal Leo at the Cathedral on Friday at 7pm, followed by a Taize liturgy.
Really big clergy moves just dropped. Whoa. Looks like I'm safe for another year, thank God. Say a prayer for these priests who are taking up new assignments. Three of our most senior priests with big parishes are retiring.
- A beautiful new steel cross proudly acknowledges our faith in SHM Old Cemetery. Many thanks to Gerrard Forestell for his work and commitment in the construction and installation of this cross. Gerrard and his family, along with countless other volunteers, have been instrumental in the maintenance and care of our cemetery. Thank you Gerrard for a 50 year commitment to our beloved dead.
After that storm a few weeks ago many that took out and damanaged a bunch of the SHJ Cemetery pine tree branches, we had the cleaned up.
- SHJ Parish is very grateful for the intrepid crew that worked on the SHJ Cemetery stone wall for the last 10 days. Dale Clemens, Gary Poitier, Bob Vesterfelt, Josh Morgan and Darcey Cook tore down the damaged wall and rebuilt it from the ground up, using as many of the original stones as possible. They also installed drainage pipe with washed rock above and below. And using a rented small back hoe to work between the head stones and remove all unused stone and old sod before covering the washed rock with new top soil. Then, raked and seeded. They saved the cemetery over $10K!!
Requesting Mass Intentions
Remember, the best gift we can give anyone is to have Holy Mass offered for them. When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his or her soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or bouquet of flowers or donation to some charity. Most importantly, we should always remember our own dearly departed loved ones in the Holy Mass and through our own prayers and sacrifices to help in their gaining eternal rest. We can also have Masses offered for persons who are living who need prayers for a particular reason, such as those undergoing surgery, those meeting a particular milestone in their life, those suffering with serious illness, or those who want to give thanks to God for a particular blessing, etc.
Requesting a Mass Intention is easy! Just contact our parish office (613.472.2220 or SacredHeart.MM@archkingston.ca) or better yet, use the mass intention envelopes found in the vestibule, fill it out and put in the $20 offering and place it in the collection basket at Mass. We will do our best to have the Mass offered on the date requested.

Summer vacations have begun and many will enjoy their cottages and vacations away. Please remember our Church expenses don’t take a vacation. Giving to the offertory is convenient and easy with e-transfers. Keep supporting your parish home when you are on vacation with this convenience! As you know, supporting the work of the Church with one’s financial resources is an essential and intrinsic part of Christian discipleship and stewardship. Two of the simplest ways of doing this are e-transfers of your offertory contributions or sending your weekly envelopes to us through the mail or dropped off in our secure mailboxes. Anointing of the Sick

Pastoral Care of the Sick: Is one of your loved ones struggling with illness or homebound? Or are they at the hospital or retirement/nursing home and would like to have a visit from one of our Pastoral Care team members or by Fr. Justin? Does your homebound or hospitalized loved one wish to receive Holy Communion? Would you like prayers for your loved one? Do you wish to have the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick? Remember that the Sacrament of Anointing is for the sick, not just a sacrament for those who are actively dying. Those Catholics confronted with serious illness, chronic illness, or surgery are invited to request the Sacrament of Anointing by calling Fr. Justin for an appointment. We also have a wonderful Pastoral Care team made up of generous parishioners who can bring Holy Communion to the sick and those confined to their own homes. Again, if you are someone or know of someone who would like to receive Sacraments at their home, please contact the office @ 613.472.2220 more information.
By using the white Flower Sponsor envelopes (located in the narthex), a one time donation of $40 will provide flowers for the sanctuary and shrines, and you'll also get a Mass intention included in that. So a great deal if you think about it! The churches are beautifully decorated in large part to your flower donations. And when you see in the Flocknotes Masses being offered "For the X Family Intentions" - usually those are from the Family flower sponsor.
